I noticed, from talking to homeschool moms, that many parents often tune to NPR. A common habit is to play it in the car or for the "No TV" homes, it's a key activity to replace the traditional TV times.
My kids especially listen to Market Place, Tech Tuesday, Author's Almanac and Science Friday.
I think it would be great to have more shows that speaks in an explanatory, yet informative manner, for any audience. For example, if you're listening to a classical station and a moment is taken to describe the historical setting in which the music was composed, it doesn't matter how old you are--you'll probably enjoy the factoid. Market Place does a good job of giving the story, and occasionally defining an economic term or phrase unique to the subject country or business. An even better example would be the Author's Almanac. The 5-minute long show is a daily dose of facts about authors and a dramatic reading of poetry. What a great resource for students to wake to at 6:35am!
I encourage all media outlets to remember that we are all learners. If WAMU wants more input from homeschoolers, let me know.
