Forty Years Later? The legacy of the Washington D.C. Riots of 1968

I came across the articles of D.C. Riots of 1968, an experience that is unforgettable. I know that the discussion at this time is out of date, however, I do want to add my experience of those days and nights when I lived near the corner of 17 street and U in NW Washington D.C.

Below is a link to my personal website which describes that experience.

Does anything ever come of a riot. You trash your own neighborhood and then you have to live in it. Some parts are just recovering now.

Hi,

Thanks so much for flagging your site and your recollections. I helped produce our series of shows on the riots, and found it to be completely fascinating (and useful for understanding some aspects of the present). The images are also quite striking. Where did you come across them?

Cheers,

Thanks Noah for your link -- and for telling us your story.

I hope Brendan won't mind me using this space to give him a shout out -- and to recommend everyone interested in DC History (and even those who aren't) listen to -- DC Riots: 40 Years After (4/2/09) and The DC Riots: Rebuilding Communities (4/9/09).

The two show Brendan produced won an award this year from the National Association of Black Journalists. We hope you'll also check out our additional online resources, photo galleries, and extended interviews at the same website.

As with all things: the more you learn, the more you realize you don't know.

After some research I come to realize that there were some legitimate protestors. However, after the igniting news of the Luther King Jr. shooting, teenagers and hoods alike began to take advantage of creating a chaotic atomosphere and indulging in looting and destruction of business.

Hi Noah,

I'm a web developer and recently set up a blog site for a client named Larry Rosen, he's an 86 year old man that is writing his memoirs of wash dc in the 1950's and 60's. he used to own a drug store in dc and it was burned down by the 1968 dc riots, I thought you might want to take a look at his website, he welcomes anyone interested to comment or chat with him about it, you'll see video footage and more dc riot photos on his blog too. http://larryrosen.org/about/
