Today @ 10 on WAMU 88.5's Diane Rehm Show: Should the government should fund some newsgathering in the future to help offset the deep financial losses in that industry? Are you for or against some kind of government-funded model?

I have to say that I found this a remarkably disappointing show. Alicia Sheperd was almost comical in her (presumably) genuine belief that traditional media's ethical codes actually contribute to the quality of journalism. Couple that with her concern for "ethics in digital media", and it was like listening to record dealer who was certain that no one wanted those soulless CDs . . .

I had some sympathy for her until she said that what NPR needed was more Glenn Beck on the air. Lost all credibility for me, right there.

I don't want the government going anywhere near this. Other than make it easier for for-profit organizations to change their legal structure to not-for-profit if they choose to, I don't want the government involved in financing news gathering organizations. I could possibly envision granting student loan forgiveness to professional journalists who then go work for the not-for-profit news organizations but that would be the extent of the involvement I'd want to see. Just my thoughts
