The Conversation

Today at 10 a.m. (EST) on WAMU 88.5's The Diane Rehm Show: The House passes a health care reform bill that now moves to the Senate for debate. Abortion rights are expected to be a serious obstacle to its passage there.

What other issues do you think will be the biggest sticking points in the Senate?

I need to be reminded of the path this bill has to follow before it is made a law. It got through the House with several concessions made to the conservative side of the aisle; now it has to go to the Senate, where it will likely be even more denuded. Finally it has to go to the president. What will likely pass, if anything passes, will hardly resemble the House bill, right? How can Democrats in the House claim this as a victory?

I believe every congressman and senator who votes "NO"based on whether they will be re-elected ot not should NOT BE RE-ELECTED because THEY re "business as usual" in Washington and the reason NOTHING MEANINGFUL FOR MAIN STREET AMERICA gets done! I also think opposing view points are good but I notice the "band wagon" passing by and some jumping on because the conversation is "negative."

This bill must be pushed forward now! make changes later, if you need to but do this NOW! I also notice insurers upping their rates every time a new law limiting their profit margin comes up. I am FOR THE PUBLIC OPTION. I recently had a need to go to the emergency room because I could not get an appointment with any doctor in a reasonable time frame. The bill is more than $3000.00 for mostly waiting in the examining room and explaining to 3 interns and one doctor, what my reason for being there was. There was blood drawn but how much THAT COST??

WE NEED A PUBLIC OPTION NOW! I don't have health insurance now because it will break me, over time. If insurance companies didn't want public option, they should have done better by their clients! NOW, i SAY SCREW THEM LIKE THEY HAVE SCREWED THEIR CLIENTS!

I agree with ezlovr1 in that I believe that our senators and representatives should put doing the right thing before getting re-elected. Unfortunately, it seems like too many politicians pay too much attention to their chances for re-election. The public option is the right thing to do. Government is not as bad as conservative ideologues make it out to be. Unfortunately, there are too many people in the country who believe what they hear coming out of the mouths of certain talk show hosts and politicians, but it is uninformed, ideological crap. I hope that our senators are better informed than their constituents are; I wish our politicians, our media, and our educational systems did a better job at informing constituents (nothing against the DR Show); and I hope that the Senate passes something meaningful and historic rather than thinking about the 2010 election. In the long run, passing healthcare reform will go down in history; winning or losing one more election will not.

I think Population growth is World's biggest problem. Yet I am expected to foot the bill for people to breed an unlimited number of children. I'd like to OPT out of this portion of my health insurance bill.
