Help us finding and photograph corners of "wilderness" in Washington...

* Do you have a favorite local park, forest or bikingtrail that makes you feel like you're in the midst of "wilderness"?
* Where do you go to "get away without getting away"?

We are looking for pictures of the best corners of local parks. Please send us pictures.

This Thursday, the Kojo Nnamdi Show will be exploring "Wilderness in Washington"--- trying to find corners of the urban and suburban landscape that make you feel like you are out in the wild ( the picture above was taken on Soapstone Valley Trail in Rock Creek Park in Northwest DC).

We're creating a page / group on flickr to compile images of nature and "wilderness" in our neighborhoods and communities.

Please send us pic's via Flickr or email them to me, along with information about location.

Finally---- If you're saying, "hey isn't MetroConnection doing that?!", the answer is "yes". Their series on "Nature via Metro" is excellent. Check it out here and share your thoughts on the series here.

There are spots on the Crescent Trail that make you feel like Daniel Boone. If you ignore the sounds of the traffic whipping along Arizona Ave (i think that's it) or the airplanes and helicopters, it really can by quite nice.

Also Rock Creek Park. I first visited that park 25 years ago and never forgot it. It is one of the major reasons I moved out here when I had the chance. Although last summer while jogging through the park I did notice a pamplet posted in a parking lot instructing visitors on how to deal with bears. I haven't been back there since.

A favorite spot of mine is Prince William Forest Park just 30 minutes from the Beltway and the largest piedmont forest in the National Park system. It has 37 miles of of trails, mostly forested and delightfully cool in the summer.

Tomorrow (August 6), we're discussing "wilderness" once again with Candy Thomson (Baltimore Sun). This time we're talking about kayaking and bicycling opportunities inside an hour's radius. Any ideas?

Check out the new map of paddling and peddling resources.
