The Conversation

Election officials in Maryland, Virginia and DC are bracing for a huge influx of voters. And already there are reports of long lines across our region. We're trying to get a handle on the good, the bad, and the ugly at local polling places:

Where did you vote?
How long were you in line?
Anything noteworthy, troubling or encouraging?

I voted at Fox Mill Elementary School in Herndon, VA (Fairfax Co). I went at 10:15 and was out by 10:30. Outside was festive. Neighbors were chatting after voting. Lots and lots of volunteers including high school students were handing out sample ballots. Judy Feder, running against Frank Wolf for the 10th Congressional district was introducing herself and shaking hands. Best of all, students from the school were selling donuts to raise money for their student government. Inside the lines moved slowly but steadily. Voters had a choice of paper or touch-screen ballots. I chose paper, marked my ballot and then fed it into the optical scanner myself. The line for touch-screen machines was much longer than the paper ballots. I was concerned the paper ballots might slow down the results but the optical scanning took care of that.

I was impressed with the phenomenal number of volunteers working, especially many young people.
