The Conversation

Greetings all! I've been trying to find the time to come up with a sort of "welcome packet" for new members of The Conversation, and have failed miserably at managing my minutes. Then I had a forehead-smacking revelation this morning when I realized I could get more done by simply asking you all for tips you would like to share with new members.

Ultimately, I'd like to greet new members with a link to this discussion, so let's all be helpful and stay on topic with our tips.

For example, John Antonelli and I have exchanged emails about how to be notified when a new topic is added to the forums. So, I'll lead off with that as one example:

Tip: Get notified! Look for the "Notify -- Email me when there are new discussions" link at the bottom of the Forum home page. (If the link says "Stop Notifying – Don't email me when there are new discussions" then you should already be receiving emails when a new topic begins.)

Of course, this will only work if you haven't turned off email notifications in your profile. To check your email notification settings, click "Settings" over on the right-hand side of the page under your name, then click "Email." You'll see a complete list of your email settings.

And be sure not only to get notifications for new topics but also be sure to get them for topics you have contributed to.

Tip: Change your profile photo It doesn't have to be a photo of you, necessarily (I, after all, don't look like the Jefferson Memorial), but you'll find you earn just a little bit more trust from your fellow members if you don't have the default avatar on your profile.

To change your profile photo, go to "Settings" and click the icon next to "Profile Photo".

If you don't feel like searching for that photo that you feel represents you perfectly, we have a couple of sample avatars based on our current design that you can download.
