The Conversation

* Which bloggers have the best read on the local pulse in your community?
* Are local newspapers and traditional media doing enough to cover local issues?
* Can citizen-journalists step into the breach?

On Monday, the Kojo Nnamdi Show will be surveying the local blog-scene. We'll be talking to citizen-journalists who compile comings-and-goings in different corners of our region. We want to compile a list (and a map) of recommended local websites.

Share your favorites, and check back soon... maybe you'll discover something new about your neighborhood!

Personally, I am a huge fan of the good old fashioned Weekend section in the Washington Post and then the weekly Gazette. Both provide more events and programs than my schedule can accommodate. The WP's Metro section and the Gazette also keeps me up to date on local feuds about roads, traffic, opinions, politics, crime, plans, sports (high school included), and restaurants. Who needs a blog when you have these great resources?

We received this tweet from a listener:

"Anyone know of Annapolis or Anne Arundel blogs? (not on the map, which is a great tool)"

Rockville has two blogs specializing in different aspects of civic life. Rockville Living reports about business and green living, and Rockville Central is policy and opinion based. They both cooperate with each other, generating a common community calendar, for example.

The Savage Maryland community had no local website besides the mill for community information, so I created www.svg20763.blogspot.com to keep the residents and visitors informed about local community events. This blog is geared towards Neighborhood Watch, Safe Activities for Kids, Promoting other community entities that are positive for the community and promoting Howard County programs that bring value to Savage.

kojo—your map calls bloomingdale a neighborhood in northeast. bloomingdale lies in northwest—we're on the western side of north capitol.
