The Conversation

Hi Folks!

I volunteer for a local dog rescue, and recently took in a small male Rottie (Jon-Jon) who was in really bad shape. His teeth had been filed down, he'd never been socialized to people or other dogs, he'd clearly never been inside a house - - it was rough! He struggled with a bad case of Giardia (an intestinal infection) for several weeks, but this seems to have been corrected with antibiotics.

He's come a long way alright! He's gone from a pathetic 63 lbs to a comparitively whopping 90 lbs! He's housebroken now, and can play nicely with my female German Shepard (also a rescue).

Here's the thing: this fella STINKS. I bathe him once a month and brush him regularly, but even so, when I open my front door, the whole house smells dog-ish, and I hate it!!! I have tried him on a variety of foods, but the smell thing persists. I regularly consider the possibility of adopting Jon-Jon because he is such a sweetheart, and I've gotten really attached, but the smell is holding me back... I don't want my house to be stinky for the duration of a dog's life.

Does anybody have any advice about how I could make this boy a little more sweet-smelling???

Thanks a Million!

What diet have you given? That is usually the answer.

Hi Betsy!

Well, I've tried a fair number of things. When I first got Jon-Jon, I had him on California Natural variably mixed with brown rice, pumpkin, chicken broth, plus salmon oil (because he had a pretty bad case of dandruff).

As he gained weight, I tapered off the added people food, although I do still occasionally give him pumpkin and the salmon oil. His stool was really soft, though, so I decided to try a different food. I did Innova for a couple of months, but his stool remained very soft, which was a real pain. Plus, I was going broke spending $50 - $60 on a bag of dog food!

So for the last couple of months I've been doing plain ole' Beneful, which actually seems to agree with him the most, in terms of firming up his stool. Even so, he is a VERY DOGGIE-SMELLING DOG.

I was wondering if parsley extract or something might help???

Thanks for any advice~
